The UK investor visa remains closed to new applicants in 2026, leaving a clear distinction between investing in the British economy and qualifying for permission to live there.
For internationally mobile families and entrepreneurs, that distinction is central to relocation planning. Capital may support a business strategy, but immigration eligibility depends on the requirements of an available visa category.
The government’s current Tier 1 Investor visa guidance confirms that new applications can no longer be submitted. Separate provisions remain for eligible existing or recent visa holders, including settlement applications and applications for family members.

The Innovator Founder route requires an endorsed business idea that meets innovation, viability and scalability requirements.
Why the Tier 1 Investor Visa Closed
The Home Office closed the route to new applicants of all nationalities on 17 February 2022, with immediate effect.
Its official closure announcement cited security concerns, exposure to illicit finance and shortcomings in the programme’s contribution to the UK economy.
Previously, the route had allowed qualifying applicants to invest in share capital or loan capital in active, trading UK companies. Its closure ended that application pathway; it did not prohibit foreign investment in British businesses.
Innovator Founder Visa: Business Credibility Takes Centre Stage
For entrepreneurs seeking to establish a business in Britain, the Innovator Founder visa provides a separate immigration framework.
Applicants must obtain endorsement from an approved body and demonstrate that their business idea is new, innovative, viable and scalable. They must also satisfy the route’s other eligibility requirements.
The assessment therefore extends beyond the availability of funds. The proposed business, its commercial prospects and its capacity to grow are central to the application.

The UK’s Tier 1 Investor visa remains closed to new applicants, according to GOV.UK guidance.
A Potential Path to Settlement, Subject to Conditions
The Innovator Founder visa normally permits a three-year stay. Holders must attend progress meetings with their endorsing body after 12 and 24 months.
Settlement may become available after three years for applicants who meet the relevant requirements. It is a conditional progression, rather than a guaranteed outcome of establishing a company.
What This Means for Relocation Planning
For prospective applicants, the practical question is which published immigration route matches their intended activities in the UK.
A business founder’s plans, a family’s relocation priorities and an investor’s portfolio objectives may overlap, but they require separate consideration. Planning around the rules of an existing route provides a firmer basis than relying on expectations of a future programme.
